USE OF ENGLISH PART FOUR - ERROR CORRECTION
In this part you have a complete text which contains extra words. You have to identify the words and write them on your answer sheet. Look for extra articles, prepositions, auxiliary verbs, pronouns etc.
Example :
1. My sister is nine years older than me but we get on with
(with)2. very well. Her name’s Stephanie, but most people call to (to)
3. her Steph. She has got married about twelve years ago (has)
4. although she hasn’t had any children. I suppose she is quite (-)
5. happy with life and as it is. (and)
Read the text quickly before you start. Get an idea of the subject. Remember, it’s one complete text not fifteen separate questions. Notice how the extra word ‘with’ is at the end of line 1 above, but if you look at line two there is no direct object! (get on with who? With me? With her? With each other?)
If you think that a line of the text is correct, you have to tick the it. There are usually between three and six lines correct in the text, so if you only have one or two, you have found mistakes that aren’t mistakes - look again. If you have seven, eight or nine correct you need to find more extra words - guess if you have to, but get it down to six!
There will not be more than one mistake on each line.
Here’s an error correction text for you to try. Time yourself (twelve minutes), and remember to read the text through first before you begin looking for words.
